چکیده

Host resistance to Shigella infections can be decreased by non-specific physical stress. Fasting lowers the number of Shigella required for a parenteral LD(50) dose. While the LD(50) by the oral route is larger in fasted than in nonfasted animals, the fasted host's susceptibility to oral infection is increased as evidenced by the increased fecal Shigella carrier state, duration of intestinal infection, and increased incidence of Shigella bacteriemia. Fatigue also increases the animal's susceptibility to shigellosis, but to a lesser extent than does fasting.

Prospective study of the association between serum antibodies to lipopolysaccharide O antigen and the attack rate of shigellosis.

A means for determining immune status against shigellosis would significantly improve the design and evaluation of interventional and other epidemiologic studies. Previous case-control studies have indicated the potential role of humoral antilipopolysaccharide antibodies. To test this proposition, 190 soldiers serving in a field unit were monitored prospectively for 2.5 months for shigellosis. ...

Epidemiological Characteristics of Imported Shigellosis in Korea, 2010–2011

Shigellosis is a global disease as food poisoning by infection of Shigella spp (S. dysenteriae, S. flexneri, S. boydii and S. sonnei). In Korea, approximately 500 cases of shigellosis have reported every year since 2004, and imported shigellosis is increasing gradually from 2006 in particular. According to increase of numbers of overseas travelers, the numbers of patients diseased with imported...

This study was conducted to determine the epidemiologic pattern's of shigellosis in children in Qazvin children hospital during 137 5-7 6. The study of 166 children with diagnosis of shigellosis (shigella was grown in s/c) during 2 years showed that: prevalence of shigellosis were high in male and summer, peak age of shigellosis was in 1-4 years (65/7%).Most common symptoms were fever (91.6%), ...

Intestinal manifestations of invasive diarrheas and their diagnosis.

Data from studies of 916 children with diarrhea, including 122 from whom shigellae were isolated, and data on patients affected in an epidemic due to Shigella dysenteriae type I were analyzed to determine whether a diagnostic clinical profile of shigellosis could be identified. Blood and/or mucus in stool, increased frequency of stool, abdominal pain, rectal tenesmus, and fever were noted more ...

Role of interleukin-1 in the pathogenesis of experimental shigellosis.

The effect of human recombinant interleukin-1 receptor antagonist on intestinal inflammation, tissue destruction, and bacterial invasion during experimental shigellosis caused by Shigella flexneri was studied in the rabbit-ligated loop infection model. Intravenous infusion of the inhibitor at a dose of 2 mg/kg per h, was initiated 30 min before intestinal loops were ligated and infected, and co...
